Thankfully I was born with the blessed ability of extreme organization, but if there's anything that I've learned throughout my career, and from owning a business, is that it never hurts to be over organized.
As an event planner, the foundation of my entire job is organization. Here are some tips and tricks I use to stay organized in my work:
Declutter
That's right! Decluttering your space ignites the feeling of organization. My mind cannot successfully operate in mess, which isn't easy for everyone to accomplish, especially if you work from home. This may be your sign to recycle that stack of papers you've been meaning to take care of, or throw out those pens that are sitting in your holder that no longer work. Decluttering my space leaves room for more creativity and productivity in my work.
Color Coding
If I ever let anyone look at my personal calendar, they would likely think I'm crazy because there is a color for every category, every occasion and basically every hour of the day. The same concept of color-tagging labels in your inbox, color coding my work calendar and daily to-do lists helps me accomplish those high priority items and stay on track.
Spreadsheets
I can't tell you how many people make fun of me for my use of spreadsheets for nearly everything in my life, Excel and it's formulas are quite literally my best friend. If there's a project that I'm working on, you best bet that there's a tracker and a spreadsheet along with it.
Being organized can be both a curse and a blessing, and although organization bleeds heavily into my personal life from my work, it helps to keep me sane throughout the day and eases the worry of the unexpected. If there were a tag-line made for event planners, it would be, 'always expecting the unexpected.' As many other event planners, I love to think that I am in control of every aspect of every event that I am planning, but there is always going to be something throwing you for a loop, which is why I say you there is no such thing as being over-organized (and over-prepared) so in those stressful moments, you are able to deescalate and quickly put a plan in action!
